Less than 80 km from Hendaye, holidaymakers who want to take advantage of their stay in the Basque country to explore northern Spain and the Spanish Basque Country can reach several nearby cities, including San Sebastian, just a stone’s throw away, Bilbao and Pamplona.

Camping near Pamplona

In Basque, the city of Pamplona is called Iruña (pronounced Irounia). With its 200,000 inhabitants, the region’s second-largest city after Bilbao is by far the most festive in the Spanish Basque Country. Located 80 kilometers from Hendaye and the Eskualduna campsite, the capital of Navarre hosts the most incredible of ferias: the Fiestas de San Fermin. Since 1924, during the second week of July, the heart of the town has been beating to the rhythm of the bodegas and the famous bullfights, whose images are seen around the world every year.

What to see and do in Pamplona

If you decide to join the party, you won’t be alone. The city is visited by over a million people.

And if Pamplona and its fiestas are so popular the world over, it’s thanks to one of the 20th century’s greatest writers: Ernest Hemingway. The author, who spent several years in Navarre during the Spanish Civil War, made his name by evoking San Fermin in his novel “Le Soleil se lève aussi” (“The Sun Also Rises”).

But it would be unfair to reduce Pamplona to a bunch of red-scarfed runaways trying not to end up on a skewer. There are many other jewels to discover in the city’s streets, such as its sublime old fortified quarter and the Parc de la Citadelle. Two of the city’s most emblematic spots, where the terraces fill up as siesta time draws to a close. The locals, who love to meet up for a drink or a meal in one of the many bars and restaurants, will be delighted to help you make the most of your visit. And if you ask them for advice, they’re sure to tell you about the impressive Santa Maria Cathedral, the Belvedere over the Arga and the Chemin de Ronde.

On the other hand, you won’t need a guide to explore the narrow streets of the historic center. Getting lost here is a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. Pamplona is full of surprises you won’t find in any guidebook. What if this was the secret to a successful vacation?
