What to do in Hendaye in the Basque Country?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Just a stone’s throw from Camping Hendaye Village Eskualduna<\/strong>, or just a minute’s drive by car, you’ll find one of Hendaye<\/strong>‘s first attractions: Ch\u00e2teau d’Abbadia<\/a>, built between 1860 and 1870. Antoine d’Abbadie was a great scientific explorer. A fascinating man, full of history: it was he who – among other things – produced the first cartography of Ethiopia. Strongly attached to the Basque country<\/strong>, he was a great defender of its language and culture.
Without an heir, he bequeathed his Ch\u00e2teau to the Acad\u00e9mie des Sciences, of which he was a member. During a visit, you’ll appreciate its architecture and history, and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Grande Plage<\/strong>. For the more inquisitive, guided tours of the Ch\u00e2teau’s various rooms are available. In the Domaine du Ch\u00e2teau, you’ll discover all the seaside flora, sheep and birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the way down, you can stroll along Boulevard de la Mer, arriving in front of the Vieux Casino<\/strong>. The perfect place for a swim or a surfing session. The Grande Plage d’Hendaye<\/a> is the ideal place to try out the thrill of riding long waves in complete safety, supervised by professionals. Also starting from the Hendaye Eskualduna campsite, and right opposite it to be exact, you’ll find “Asporots Ttipi”, the Maison de la Corniche Basque<\/strong>. All you have to do is cross the crosswalk to reach this former farmhouse, now a Centre permanent d’initiatives pour l’environnement. In a few words, it’s a place to discover local biodiversity, explain the state of our cliffs and the evolution of the coastline, with a floor for exhibitions, creative workshops…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, a little tip from the locals: if on one of your walks or afternoons at the beach, lying on your towel, you come across someone telling you that the “enbata” is coming, it might be time for you to head back to the campsite! Yes, in Hendaye, that’s what we call the moment when Mother Nature sweeps across the beach, with her little sea breeze from the west, sometimes violent, that hits in the late afternoon. A big cottony cloud settles over the Fontarrabie mountains, and the wind blows and lifts all the towels and parasols on the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to do in and around Hendaye<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Coming to the Basque Country also offers many other facets to explore. The Eskualduna campsite is within easy reach of other towns on the Basque coast<\/strong>, including Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Gu\u00e9thary and Bidart. Then there are the Basque villages of the hinterland and the many places to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do I get from Hendaye to San Sebastian?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Other options for holidaymakers in search of discovery during their stay include a trip to San Sebastian. Located just 25 km from San Sebastian in Spain, a stay in Hendaye is an easy way to reach the Spanish Basque country. You can either make the journey by car, or take advantage of the rail shuttle that links Hendaye and San Sebastian <\/strong>in just 35 minutes every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to eat while camping in Hendaye?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If the waves aren’t there, you can still cool off with an ice cream facing the sea. And if the ice cream wasn’t enough, and you’d like to dine in, you’ll be spoilt for choice of restaurants in theEspace Sokoburu<\/strong>, which also houses the Serge Blanco Thalassotherapy<\/a> Center. If you’d like to sample the local cuisine, cider by the barrel, fish a la plancha, the cider house menu and many Basque culinary specialties.
